Description

This module is a survey course of Japanese history and covers from the ancient period to the modern period until WWII. Main issues include: the establishment, transformation and demise of the centralised state in the ancient period; the power transition in the samurai military rule in the medieval period; the establishment of sakoku and the opening of the country and fall of the Tokugawa Shogunate in the Edo period; and Japanese imperialism in the modern period from the first Sino-Japanese War until WWII. Videos are often used to assist students' learning.
